But what career opportunities are open to newly qualified translators and interpreters?
Several options are open to qualified translators such as:
– becoming a freelance translator and work on one-off projects for translation companies such as CG Traduction & Interprétation. Do bear in mind, though, that starting out with a relatively limited network and experience is not always easy, especially if you lack the references.
– joining a company as a salaried translator. However, the translations (technical, legal, medical, etc.) can lack variety, which, as some might argue, undermines what makes being a translator so interesting.
– taking up a general position in a company and be involved in occasional translation projects: executive assistant, international project manager, etc.
– joining a translation company to take up the position of translation project manager or in-house translator.
As far as interpreters are concerned, freelance work is the popular choice. While major international bodies such as the UN have permanent in-house translators, most other bodies such as the French Foreign Office work with a network of freelance interpreters.
