COP 21 (COnference of Parties – 21st session) on climate change will kick off in Paris on 30 November. Simultaneous interpreting will provide the link between all of the represented countries. CG will interpret some of the scheduled meetings for and running alongside COP21.

How can we avoid using up half of our oil, coal and gas resources?

How can we avoid ensuing catastrophes?

  • Scientists believe that to stay under 2°C, only 565 GT of CO2 can be emitted (objective set in Cancun in 2010),
  • but there is already 2795 GT ready to burn.
  • On the one hand, there is an abundant supply of resources and, on the other, a great deal of investment that has already gone into fossil fuels.
  • Furthermore, from the industry’s perspective, switching from polluting to “clean” energy sources would require $40,000 billion in investment by 2050, according to the figures published by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
  • By contrast, the total fossil fuel reserves (priced at $100/barrel) would generate over $170,000 billion over the same period.

These figures give us a good idea of the complexity of decisions that need to be made by individuals and local authorities.

What individuals can do to help

We tend to forget that we live in a world of two extremes: while some parts of the world suffer from energy poverty, other parts over-consume.

We also tend to forget that we are the ones responsible for how much energy we consume and that 3.5 billion individuals live in energy poverty, while the rest of the world over-consumes.

The following example best illustrates this point:

Each Ethiopian consumes an average of 52 kWh/year.

It takes almost ten times as much electricity (452 kWh) to run your fridge…

How can the right balance be sought?
